Badfish Creek 20-40k TT

July 26 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm

Two riders compete in the Badfish Creek 20-40k Time Trial

The Badfish Creek 20-40k TT (Time Trial), sponsored by Mad City Velo and hosted by the Wisconsin-Illinois Cycling Association (WIIL Cycle), is a challenging solo race in Stoughton, WI, starting at the intersection of Center Rd and Old Stone Rd (near 785 Center Rd, Stoughton, WI 53589). This American Bike Racing (ABR)-sanctioned event begins at 9:00 AM CDT with the USAC/WCA State Championship, followed by MATTS and T.W.O. divisions at 9:45 AM, with riders launching every minute as part of the Mid America Time Trial Series (MATTS). Offering 20 km (12.5 miles) for juniors under 19 and masters 65+ or 40 km (25 miles) for others, this flat-to-rolling course welcomes all levels—juniors, masters, and open categories. Mad City Velo, a Madison-based USAC team (madcityvelo.org), awards medals for the top 5 per category and cash prizes ($30 for fastest overall, $25 for second, $20 for third, plus women’s and juniors’ awards). Register at wiilcycle.org/register for $30 (adults) or $15 (juniors)—on-site adds $5 ABR license, opening at 7:30 AM at Rutland Town Garage (785 Center Rd). Post-race, enjoy snacks and community vibes, a highlight of Wisconsin cycling events.

The course is a scenic loop through the Badfish Creek Wildlife Area, starting at Center and Old Stone Rds. Riders head east on Old Stone Rd, turn right (south) on Danks Rd, right (west) on Old Stage Rd, and right (northeast) back on Old Stone Rd, completing one 20k lap or two for 40k. It’s mostly flat (<100 ft elevation) with gentle rollers in Dane County’s Driftless Region, featuring smooth pavement ideal for 25-30 mph efforts—20k in ~25-30 minutes, 40k in ~50-55 minutes per past results. Open to traffic, safety is paramount—ride right, use a rear red blinker (highly recommended), and no drafting; marshals guide crossings. Park along Center Rd and respect the Rutland community by riding single file during cooldowns to preserve this Wisconsin TT favorite.

Badfish Creek 20-40k TT Weather

Late July weather in Stoughton delivers hot, humid conditions, with morning temperatures ranging from 75-85°F at the 9:00 AM start—expect a warm, sweaty ride. Humidity averages 80-90%, intensifying the heat—bring two bottles for hydration. Winds blow at 8-12 mph, often from the south or southwest, offering a tailwind on flats but a push on rollers—pace to optimize effort. There’s a 30-40% chance of scattered showers or thunderstorms, though mornings often stay dry—check forecasts closer to race day for gear adjustments.
