Located at 6641 N 6000W Rd, Manteno, IL 60950, Camp Shaw-Waw-Nas-See is a historic 105-acre retreat in Kankakee County, just an hour south of Chicago, serving as the scenic venue for the Shaw Crank Redemption 20k Gravel Time Trial. Established in 1946, this 4-H camp is nestled along Rock Creek amidst rolling hardwood forests, open meadows, and a former Pottawatomi village site, offering a picturesque setting for time trial racing on its surrounding gravel roads.

The camp features a variety of facilities, including cabins, a craft barn, a pool, and a rec shelter, with activities like archery, ziplining, challenge courses, and canoeing available for campers, making it a versatile outdoor hub. Camp Shaw’s welcoming environment accredited by the American Camping Association.

For cyclists, the venue provides ample parking and easy access to the race start, with nearby trails and natural features like the Kishwaukee River adding to the event’s appeal. Also, Camp Shaw-Waw-Nas-See hosts community events like Shoe Fest and the Camp Shaw Drawdown.  Both showcase its role as a gathering place for diverse groups. The race events are organized by the Wisconsin-Illinois Cycling Association and sanctioned by American Bicycle Racing (ABR). Further, this venue blends natural beauty with competitive racing. It offers a unique gravel time trial experience.

 

Directions to Camp Shaw

Camp Shaw-Waw-Nas-See (6641 N 6000W Rd, Manteno, IL 60950) is easily accessible from major regional cities, with clear routes to the camp entrance:

  • From Chicago (approx. 55 miles, 1-1.5 hours): Take I-57 S toward Kankakee. Take Exit 322 for Manteno, turn right onto E 9000N Rd, and go 7 miles to 6000W Rd. Turn left onto 6000W Rd and continue 2.5 miles; the camp entrance is on your left.
  • From Rockford (approx. 95 miles, 1.5-2 hours): Take I-90 E to I-39 S/US-51 S toward Bloomington. Merge onto I-57 S via Exit 97A, then take Exit 322 for Manteno. Turn right onto E 9000N Rd, go 7 miles to 6000W Rd, turn left, and proceed 2.5 miles; the entrance is on your left.
  • From Naperville (approx. 50 miles, 1-1.5 hours): Take I-55 S to I-57 S toward Kankakee. Take Exit 322 for Manteno, turn right onto E 9000N Rd, and go 7 miles to 6000W Rd. Turn left onto 6000W Rd and continue 2.5 miles; the camp entrance is on your left.
